History of Settlement in San Diego
The original inhabitants of San Diego are known as San Diegueno and La Jolla people who are a historical culture that prevailed during the middle Holocene period. It was also home to the Kumeyaay people who are Native American people of the extreme southwestern United States and northwest Mexico. They live in the states of California in the US and Baja California in Mexico. The region historically was under the Spanish colony before the Mexican empire engulfed it in 1821 and San Diego became part of the Mexican territory of Alta California.
